Getting ready

What to bring and what to mention

Fewer restrictions than an airline, and two or three things to say beforehand rather than at the aircraft steps.

Baggage is confirmed by weight and volume

Capacity depends on weight and volume, as well as passengers, fuel, route and the aircraft compartment. State quantities, dimensions and special items — golf, skis, boards or bicycles — when asking for a quote so the operator can confirm the right option.

Declare the pet before requesting a quote

Cabin travel, restraints or carrier, documents, limits and possible charges depend on species, size, aircraft, operator and route. It is confirmed in writing; cabin travel, no carrier and no charge are not promised in advance.

Documents

On a domestic flight, current official photo identification for every passenger. Internationally, a passport and whatever visa applies. Every passenger goes on the list by full name.

The list closes before the flight. Adding somebody at the last moment is not always possible, particularly on international routes.

Catering

Food, drinks, allergies and other needs can be requested. Provider, cost and lead time depend on airport, operator and notice, and are confirmed in writing.

What cannot come aboard

Private aviation has fewer restrictions than an airline, but not none. Explosives, compressed gases and loose lithium batteries stay off any aircraft. Batteries inside a device travel without trouble.

There is a middle category worth raising before you arrive: sporting firearms, drones and large amounts of cash can be carried, but they need declaring and sometimes a permit, and that paperwork cannot be improvised on the apron.
